There is a song I hear only with the ears of my soul. There are no notes, no tune, but I hear singing just the same. When the evening sky glows with a fiery sunset, I hear an anthem trumpeted by its Creator. In the rhythmic wash of waves on the ocean shore I detect a holy meter marked out by eternal hands. The measured beat of my husband’s heart where I rest my head keeps time to a love song whose melody originates in heaven.
Thomas Merton writes, “The whole world is charged with the glory of God and I feel fire and music under my feet.” He is aware of the Father’s love song, the music weaving through his days, unheard by human ear yet known by a heart attuned to His voice. God sings to reach that inner place of the spirit with a song so imbued with love it can only be heard by a broken heart. A heart aware of its need to be saved is most receptive to the serenade of a Savior.
“The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17 NKJV)
When the Old Testament prophet, Zephaniah, recorded these words he was conveying God’s joy over the people of Israel turning from their wicked ways to a revival of true faith. With beauty and mystery the Old Testament reaches forward to speak into the lives of present day believers in Jesus Christ. Now our mighty Savior is in our midst, rejoicing gladly in our salvation, now He is soothing us with His love, now He is singing over us like a mother over her child. Can you hear His song?
He orchestrates, brings our lives together cohesively, to produce something good and beautiful for those who love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan. (Rom. 8:28 The Voice) From all the discordant notes of our lives He creates a symphony He rejoices over, one we could never compose ourselves.
The song we hear God singing now is only a prelude, a preliminary overture to something more important to follow. No eye has ever seen and no ear has ever heard and it has never occurred to the human heart all the things God prepared for those who love Him. – (1 Cor. 2:9) The final movement of God’s song to us will be heard with heavenly ears when we reach our new home with Him.
God’s love ballad has a melody which never leaves us, even when the world around jangles harshly in our ears. His singing has the ability to quiet us when we cry out in our hurt and trouble. Remember the tone of His love, bringing resolution to dissonance — peace to disharmony — Christ to the earth. Christ is God’s finale, His final stanza, the Song to end all songs, sung over the world to show the Father’s heart. Are you listening?
